Allergic reactions occur when a persons who are sensitive to an allergen and experience uncomfortable symptoms. Allergic reactions tend to be more severe when exposure to allergen is repeated on different occasions, and each time it requires smaller and smaller amounts of the allergen to cause symptoms. In most cases of environmental and pet allergies, simply taking an antihistamine such as Benadryl, and/or a decongestant will relieve symptoms, and some people also may also require immunotherapy and asthma treatment in addition to other medications as well. Substances like shellfish, poison ivy, peanuts, and bee stings should be avoided whenever possible, because more severe reactions usually result when exposure occurs. I can recall hearing stories people who broke out in hives and rashes because they ate peanuts that they unknowingly were allergic too. I even had a friend growing up that was allergic to chocolate. I believe that it was the cocoa that he specifically had a problem with. Some adults and children who have experienced severe allergic reactions in the past, must carry an Epi-Pen in case of accidental exposure. The Epi-Pen contains epinephrine and comes in a pre-filled syringe ready for emergency administration. You simply pop off the And in sham it into an arm or a leg. The Epi-Pen can be administered right through clothing so there is no need to waste valuable time trying to remove clothing. Healthy Intimacy

By Dawn Crouse Why do we think that intimacy can be achieved with strangers and that we will be pleased with the result? Immediate intimacy is fraught with anxiety, is detrimental to ones mental health, and is not fulfilling. We do not ram Tolstoys writing into the hands of toddlers and insist that they not only read it and understand it, but that they enjoy the process. We do not invite students in pre-med courses to practice surgery. Circumventing appropriate processes leads to disaster. Relationships operate under a process similar to many other activities, a process that should not be circumvented. Delayed gratification is the primary lesson of childhood and the socialization process. Children are taught to postpone the immediate experience of pleasure. They learn to use bathrooms, silverware, and complete sentences. They learn to look both ways before crossing the street, to color in the lines, to ask instead of taking. Postponement reaps greater rewards: college degrees lead to better pay, practice makes a better performer, and saved money buys a home. Too often people become intimate with someone whom they barely know; they engage in sexual activity for which the relationship is not prepared. Sexual activity implies an intimacy with ones partner. It presupposes that each partner is emotionally safe. Intimacy is more than the baring of ones body; it is the baring of the soul. Have you ever been in line at the supermarket or someplace and a person near you begins to pour out his heart to you? He tells you personal information. You learn about their relationships, health, job, griefs, and perhaps joys. You feel uncomfortable but feel unable to stop their disclosure. It is inappropriate to share intimate information with strangers. It is equally inappropriate to become sexually intimate with partners whom you barely know. Delayed gratification requires strength. It might be more fun to graduate high school, or even drop out, and work a minimum wage job that does not expect you to think about the job once you punch out. Going to college and developing a career requires discipline and diligence, and is labor intensive. The rewards, though, are worthy of the delayed pleasures. Developing relationships need firm foundations for survival and success. Cultivated with care, relationships are more likely to bloom and endure than relationships in which one or both partners announce that they are in love by the second date. Sexual intimacy is safer and typically more enjoyable with a committed partner, with a partner who is trusted and cared for. Spontaneity certainly has its place in romantic relationships. Dangerous behavior, behavior that is detrimental to your physical, emotional, or financial health, though, does not belong in a relationship. Protect yourself and your partner from impetuous and unrealistic expectations of trying to continue a relationship that you refuse to take the time and attention to develop carefully. Healthy individuals make healthy relationships. Healthy individuals understand the benefits of delayed gratification and are disciplined in their choices. Relationships demand work, and work requires strength. Develop the strength of character to expect healthy relationships and to practice appropriate intimacy. Choosing What To Wear When Attending A Medieval Wedding

By Rose Smith You’ve been invited to attend a medieval wedding and would like to dress up in a period costume, but you’re at a loss of what to choose. Before you run out and purchase anything, you should first find out if the wedding is going to be a strictly peasant style medieval wedding or is the couple focusing on a wedding that is more suited to high nobles, lords and kings. Showing up in peasant garb when everyone else is in rich-looking outfits would certainly be awkward. A lot of couples will put together a wedding combining the two social classes. They may have a simple wedding ceremony outside in nature (as the villagers and local farmers would do) and then move on to a medieval feast in a hall decorated to look like a banquet held in a castle. In this case, you could wear a costume that falls somewhat between the two classes, perhaps selecting the attire appropriate for well-to-do merchants, lesser nobles, royal knights, or a lady-in-waiting. On the other hand, the couple may elect to have an elaborate church wedding and then have their reception at some outdoor venue, such as a park or local gardens. If such is the case, you need to keep in mind that royalty did not “party in the park” when it came to such an important celebration. Dressing down would be more appropriate choosing attire more fitting to the lower classes such as a serving wench, a lesser knight, a monk and a villager. Just like today’s modern world, clothing styles changed rapidly with each generation. Be that as it may, there are still some common elements through most of the styles. Men and women often had certain items of clothing that were worn by both genders. The fabric used for medieval clothing was heavier than it is today. If you plan on sewing your own costumes, using upholstery fabrics would be best. Keep in mind that pastel colors were nonexistent at this time. The colors should be vibrant, rich and deep. Choose fabrics that contain deep blues, emerald or forest green, deep reds and burgundies, ocher, bright yellows and chocolate browns. The kirtle (undergarment) can be of a lighter weight material if you wish (if it is going to be entirely covered), but your cotehardie (the main outer garment) should be rich looking. Choose a suitable fabric for this such as velvet, brocade or damask. These garments were worn by both men and woman, with the man’s being shorter in length. Take care in choosing the fabric pattern. Medieval clothing did not contain stripes, polka dots or small patterns. The occasional outfit may have had large diamond shapes, but this was rare. By the fourteenth century buttons began to make an appearance and were created using small balls of cloth which were then stuffed with wool. Before buttons were invented, people used leather laces, ribbons and other such ties to secure clothing. Peasants, villagers and other workers didn’t have the money or access to the fine, rich materials that the nobles wore. Instead, their clothing consisted of rough wool and linen garments. If you elect to wear peasant garb, choose attire made from linen, cotton or other such materials so you will remain comfortable. It is usually more feasible and affordable to rent a medieval costume. However, the downside is that unless you live in a large city that has a variety of local costume rental shops or a professional theatre from which you may be able to buy or rent your attire, your costume selection may be limited. How I Lost Weight and Still Ate Junk Food

By Angie Lewis Sound too good to be true? Well think again! Its true, eat what you want whenever you want, and still lose weight. How do I know this? Ive worked the program! This is not a diet. It is a program. If you stick with the program I guarantee, you will lose weight. I usually dont have a problem with my weight, but when I quit smoking, I certainly did. Two weeks after I quit smoking I gained three pounds, and the funny thing was, I was still eating the same amount of food as I was before. I can munch on my Pringles, and savor my coffee ice cream whenever I want and still lost weight while doing this program. And so can you! Before the food even has a chance to digest, it begins to rot in the gut. Improper food combining impedes the digestion and elimination cycles. Poor assimilation of food makes our bodies tired and constipated. It takes so much energy trying to digest meat combined with a starch, that all we want to do after eating a poorly combined meal is take a nap. And the food still sits in our stomachs for another twenty hours putrefying! If we only ate the steak with a salad and side of vegetable, it would only take three to four hours to digest. We wouldnt feel tired afterwards, and we could eat all we want of that steak and salad and lose weight! Unbelievable you say? Not really. My husband and I have been on this eating program for over ten years, and we both absolutely love the results. It keeps our weight down and we have so much more energy when we properly combine our food groups. I have been known to come off the program for various reasons; the biggest being not having the opportunity to cook my own meals. If you go off this program, changes do take place in the body the very next day; constipation and lack of energy are the biggest culprits. After several days away from the program major changes take place where it affects the way you look and feel. If you dont feel good you dont look good either. This affects your whole outlook on life, which is detrimental to your spiritual and emotional well-being. Stick with the program! Of course the most important part of this program, as with any program is adhering to it no matter what. Dont think that just because you lost 5 pounds in four weeks, and have more energy that you can stop the program. The most difficult part about this program is not cooking our own meals. Summer Photo Taking Tips

By Vera Raposo “We’re having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave.” No doubt you are one of many in our nation trying to get through a long hot summer. Well, take heart! There is one activity which will not only give you pleasure, but memories to last a lifetime. It’s time to take out your new scrapbook, dust it off, and add new pages of photos to it. Use a photo tip in the next section to make sure you are capturing the best summer pictures ever. Summer yields a myriad of opportunities. Photograph your favorite flower, plant or tree. If you enjoy the beach or pool, flash the splash! Take different shots of children at play using color and/or black and white. Dare to be different! If you enjoy early morning walks, take your camera with you. Whether you walk around Central Park or simply around your own block, nature has a way of revealing the minutest detail of summer to you. Capture it! Here are some photo tips: Use a digital camera so that you can edit your photos on line. If a digital camera is not available to you, use a standard camera and have plenty of film and batteries on hand according to the camera’s specifications. Keep an account of where you took the photos so that you will be able to label them in your scrapbook. When taking pictures outdoors, stay away from direct sunlight as it will result in shadowed photos. Overcast days are ideal for picture-taking. Experiment with close-ups, i.e., zoom in – zoom out. Use light and dark to give your photos perspective. Indoor picture-taking also allows you to experiment with light and darkflash on – flash off. When traveling to any local or foreign destination include scenic photos of waterfalls, the local streets, people, rock formations, beaches, towns, historic landmarks, etc. When taking a picture of a friend or loved one in front of an historic setting, stand as far back as possible so that the entire backdrop is captured. Take a picture of a sunset. The colors derived from it can never be duplicated. Be creative! Photography is quite subjective. Only you know what appeals to you. Enjoy the experience. Now that your photos are ready for the scrapbook, begin to improvise on how you wish it to look. Use pastels or textured paper for summer photos. There are many scrapbook sites online that give you excellent ideas on how to set up, maintain, and enjoy the process. Memories last a lifetime. Ensure that your photos last as well. Beginner’s Guide to the Chakras

By Ceri Balston Chakras are energy or power centres that are positioned along the body. They function as energy transformers, taking the energy from the environment around you and transporting it into and around your body; conversely they also take energy from your body and expel it into the environment. The chakras also change this energy into a form that your body can use and is vital for your health and well-being. In Sanskrit the word chakra means “wheel” and refers to the shape and the spinning nature of chakras. A healthy and balanced chakra will spin quicker than one out of balance and will be able to transform the energies around you faster. There are seven main chakra centres that are positioned along the spine from the coccyx at the base all the way up to the top of your head. Each of these is associated with different emotions and parts of the body. Other chakras centres are located on the hands and feet. Some people do claim to be able to see chakras, but if you’re like most people and you can’t then you can imagine them as spinning vortexes of light, coming out of your body at right angles, with each chakra a different colour of the rainbow. The seven major chakras are positioned over the various endocrine glands that are found in the body, such as the adrenal, thyroid and pituitary glands. These glands are responsible for secreting the hormones that regulate the physical and emotional processes in your body such as happiness, energy levels and physical desire. The chakra associated with each gland helps to keep this secretion balanced. Keeping your chakras balanced and healthy therefore will help to keep the hormone levels in your body balanced resulting in emotional and physical well-being. If you’re finding it hard to imagine how the chakras work then here’s an example that might help — Have you ever gone to a really vibrant restaurant or bar feeling completely exhausted and in a bad mood but when you left were full of energy and all the joys of spring? This of course could in part be due to the great people you met that night but if you think about it carefully you might have noticed the mood of the venue and felt your spirits lift soon after you walked through the door. At this point your chakras got to work and started to take this vibrant energy for you and your body whilst at the same time getting rid of all the negative energy that was making you so tired and grouchy. So in no time at all, and with no effort or thought, you have just helped to balance your chakras and stay on the road to good mental and physical health. Of course you don’t have to spend all your free time in happening bars to help you balance your chakras, there are many far simpler and easier ways to do this including meditation, crystal therapy, sound therapy and massage, even just visualising them spinning vibrantly and full of light will have beneficial results. If your chakras are out of balance for any period of time it can, apart from having a negative affect upon your emotional well being, manifest itself in the form of disease. Root Chakra – Located at the base of the spine this chakra is the centre of your basic needs for security, belonging and survival and is the chakra that connects us with the physical earth. The colour red, the adrenal gland and the element earth are associated with this chakra. When balanced one will feel connected to nature and have a trust in nature’s laws. Out of balance this chakra could cause health problems with the rectum and hips, such as haemorrhoids and constipation. Examples of emotional problems could be too much attention and focus on material possessions and an inability to trust nature. Sacral Chakra — Located near the genitals this chakra is the centre for your creativity, sexual energy and pure emotions. It is associated with the colour orange, the reproductive glands, and the element water. When this chakra is in balance one will be friendly, open and will have no trouble sharing feelings with others. Health issues associated with this chakra if out of balance are problems with the reproductive and urinary systems. Emotional concerns would be a worry around sexual and emotional issues. Solar Plexus Chakra — Located at the solar plexus, just below the navel, this chakra is where the personality is formed and is associated with feelings of self worth, identity, determination, personal power and passion. The colour for this chakra is yellow and is associated with the pancreas and the element fire. When balanced this chakra will give one a sense of inner calm and peace, and tolerance towards others. If this chakra is out of balance possible health concerns could be problems with the stomach, spleen and small intestine. Diabetes, liver disease and ulcers are also possible problems. Emotional issues would be manifested by a need to dominate and a need for material security and wealth. Heart Chakra — This chakra is located at the centre of the chest and is where feelings and emotions are processed, including compassion, vulnerability, tenderness, detachment, hurt, bitterness, courage and forgiveness. It is associated with the colour green, the thymus gland and the element air. When balanced the heart chakra will give one a feeling of wholeness and an acceptance of life and relationships. Out of balance will often mean a problem with accepting love from others or loving insincerely or for rewards. Possible physical problems could be heart problems, blood disease or problems with the immune system. Throat Chakra — This chakra is located between the collar bones and is where emotions are mediated and communicated. The colour light blue, the adrenal gland and the element ether are associated with this chakra. Is Fasting A Good Idea?

By Marcia Bowman Another female on another diet, yada, yada, yada… But does fasting work as a tool for weightloss? We females need calories, protein, iron and calcium, it has been like that since the dawn of time. But depending on our age we may need more of one than another, especially at given points throughout our lives. Fasting, especially for a female during adolescence can prove disastrous for a long and healthy life and will not contribute to healthy, sustainable weightloss. We need protein, vitamins and minerals 24 hours a day, so under no circumstance would I ever suggest that fasting would be or could be good for you. Of course though, I am not a doctor or a nutritionist, so recommend that if you are considering fasting or for that matter trying any diet, always consult a professional first. What fasting actually does though, is trick the mind and body into thinking that some kind of famine or starvation is occuring, so your natural survival instinct kicks in and slows your metabolism. In turn your body then burns fewer calories so that you will survive on your reserves of stored fat. Think about this though for a minute your body burns fewer calories, well as we know, the key to weightloss is burning calories. So what your body is actually trying to do is keep its equilibrium. If are thinking or considering fasting for weightloss, then do not do it! You will be at odds with your own body, it just doesnt make sense.. It has been reported in many cases lower your blood pressure, lower your body temperature and you may feel as though your tongue is ‘coated’. The blood pressure and body temperature lowering is great if you need them lowering but in many cases it can be very dangerous. It is also said by some quarters that fasting is ‘therapeutic’, all I know is that if a human being doesn’t consume enough calories on a regular basis, enough that is, to sustain essential body functions e.g. (the heart beating, the lungs breathing etc), the body will then start to draw on its own reserves to provide the energy it requires. This is when the brain does not distinguish between fat or muscle, it just takes what it needs from wherever it can get it. Of course some religious beliefs promote a period of fasting, sometimes up to several days. If this is the case for you then just make sure that you drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated. In a nutshell, my opinion is. if you ARE going to fast, only do it for a maximum of 24 hours, then eat healthily for another 48 before fasting again, in my opinion that is the way to keep a you in top condition. The old saying goes ‘everything in moderation’ well, I agree, a balanced sensible way of looking after our bodies is the way to go whatever your age and current state of health. Nail Fungus: An Unsightly Problem

By Michael Russell Nail fungus is not a nice thing. It is an unsightly and nasty infection that can invade either your fingernails or toenails. It is more likely that people will have toenail fungus, simply because for a large part of the year, most of us have socks and shoes on, which are ideal for growing fungus because they are dark and usually moist to a certain extent. Our toenails and fingernails are pretty effective barriers against damage and infection. However, once an infection has set up shop in your nail bed, that barrier can work against you as you try to get rid of the fungus. What was so good at protecting the skin under your nail is now protecting the fungus as it takes up residence. When you first start to get a nail infection, the edges or base of your nail shows the first signs. At that point and throughout the infection, you can have some discomfort, itching, or pain in the skin around the edge of your nail. As it gets worse, your cuticles can bleed and even detach themselves from the nail. You may also notice pus developing along with the bleeding. Your nail may also turn a nasty yellowish green, yellowish brown or any color in between. Usually the nails start to thicken and become lined or grooved and develop little holes. Nail fungus can be contagious. It loves moist places and especially moist places where people walk around in their bare feet. You can pass on or receive nail fungus in showers, bathrooms, locker rooms or even by using someone else’s nail file! Another culprit in the spread of nail fungus can be nail salons. If the instruments are not sterilized correctly or if the nail files are passed from person to person, it could spread infections. Also, applying artificial nails and darker nail polishes don’t allow the air or light to penetrate to the nail bed, which creates a safe haven for fungus to grow. Nail polish remover can also dry out your nails and cuticles, leaving them susceptible to infection. Once you have a nail infection, hopefully it will clear up rather easily. There are many over the counter products that you can apply to the nail. Sometimes they won’t work, so you may have to end up going to a doctor for a prescription. They can provide a prescription for potent medicines, including antibiotics and specialty drugs. Nail fungus is unsightly, unhealthy and most of all embarrassing. However, if you do happen to be unlucky enough to have your healthy nails take a turn for the worse, there are options out there. As with any infection or sickness, you can start out taking simple precautions against the fungus, but if it gets into your nails or keeps spreading once you have started treating it, don’t give up hope. Make an appointment with your doctor and he should be able to help you get it under control and out of your life for good.
